Learners begin by developing a shared understanding of PCA terminology, concepts, and expectations, then explore how each competency supports stronger, more coordinated, and more accountable primary care.

PCA 101: Foundations - Primary Care Advancement Core Competencies Series

The courses introduces practical tools, workflows, and decision-making approaches that help teams assess current capabilities, identify gaps, and determine realistic next steps for improvement. Through examples and applied activities, learners connect concepts such as team-based care, integrated services, population health, data use, network partnerships, and value-based care to everyday primary care operations. By the end of the course, learners will be prepared to recognize foundational PCA capabilities, discuss improvement priorities with their teams, and contribute to a phased action plan that supports continued primary care transformation.

What You Will Learn

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the purpose and connection of the six PCA core competencies.

  • Assess current primary care capabilities and identify priority areas for improvement.

  • Apply foundational tools and workflows to support team-based care, integrated services, population health, data use, network partnerships, and value-based care.

  • Use basic performance information to monitor progress and support continuous improvement.

  • Explain how value-based care agreement requirements connect to primary care operations and team responsibilities.

  • Create a phased action plan that supports continued advancement of PCA capabilities.

Continuing Education

This course provides an awareness-level orientation to value-based care agreements within NCQA’s Primary Care Advancement program.

2. PCA 101: Foundations - Primary Care Advancement for Behavioral Health and Integrated Team-Based Care

This course provides an awareness-level orientation to integrated team-based care within NCQA’s Primary Care Advancement program.

3. PCA 101: Foundations - Primary Care Advancement for Data Management and Exchange

This course provides an awareness-level orientation to data management and exchange within NCQA’s Primary Care Advancement program.

4. PCA 101: Foundations - Primary Care Advancement for Network Partnerships

This course provides an awareness-level overview of Network Partnerships in NCQA’s Primary Care Advancement program.

5. PCA 101: Foundations - Primary Care Advancement for Population Health and Care Management

This course provides an awareness-level orientation to Population Health and Care Management within NCQA’s Primary Care Advancement program.

6. PCA 101: Foundations - Primary Care Advancement Maturity

This course provides an awareness-level orientation to the Primary Care Maturity core competency within NCQA’s Primary Care Advancement program.
