Distinction in Behavioral Health Integration: Success Stories From Clinicians on the Front Lines
Behavioral health continues to be at the forefront of health care, affecting quality of life and health outcomes, and the pandemic's impact has increased the number of patients who could benefit from behavioral health integration in primary care practices. NCQA Distinction in Behavioral Health Integration provides guidance for practices to establish solid and effective processes for ensuring that patients continue to get the right care at the right time, whether it's primary care or a behavioral health intervention. This special QIS course lets participants hear directly from clinicians who have embraced NCQA’s Distinction in Behavioral Health Integration. Jennifer Anglin, MS, CHES, PCMH CCE
Jennifer Anglin is a Manger of Recognition Policy at NCQA. Her responsibilities include creation and maintenance of PCMH resources and providing support to practices going through transformation or annual review. Prior to NCQA, Jennifer worked for Purdue University by assisting practices throughout the state of Indiana on quality improvement and research projects as well as supporting them to meet Medicaid’s Promoting Interoperability program and Medicare’s MIPS program. Jennifer’s professional interests include health policy, research, and education. She has a particular interest in social determinants of health and the behavioral health aspect of Patient-Centered Medical Homes. Jennifer holds a BA in secondary education from Valparaiso University and a master’s degree in health science from Indiana State University. Jennifer is a Certified Health Education Specialist and has been a NCQA Patient-Centered Medical Home Certified Content Expert (PCMH CCE) since 2013.
Ritu Chandra, MD, FAAP
Ritu Chandra, MD, FAAP, is founder of Preferred Medical Group in Phenix City, Alabama. In addition to her pediatric practice, she is an Assistant Clinical Professor at Mercer University School of Medicine and Georgia Health Sciences University. She is also faculty for training Physician Assistant students from University of Alabama in Birmingham and from University of South Alabama in Mobile. Dr. Chandra is an advocate for the children in her community and for for children’s health issues at the state level. In 2012, she was awarded the CATCH grant by the American Academy of Pediatrics to research barriers that keep children from having a pediatric medical home. Dr. Chandra is board certified in pediatrics and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She serves on the Health Advisory Committee of the Phenix City Head Start and on the Board of Care Network of East Alabama. She is also Chair of the Nominating Committee of the Alabama Chapter of American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Chandra completed her residency in Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota and at Nassau University Medical Center.
Jodi Polaha, Ph.D
Integrated behavioral health in rural communities has been central to Dr. Jodi Polaha’s career. She is passionate about developing a behavioral health workforce “at home.” She has been involved in every aspect of integrated care from direct service to development of dozens of practices including a primary care-based telehealth clinic. She has trained over 100 students, created dozens of field training/practica and co-founded an internship in rural Virginia. She has conducted NIMH and other funded studies focusing on integrated care, publishing over 20 studies in this area. She is currently the co-editor of an APA journal that has systems of care as its focus. She has been a leader/developer of ETSU’s nationally recognized Interprofessional Education Program and in developing integrated care at ETSU Pediatrics and Family Medicine, where the progressive model of integrated care was featured in The Atlantic Magazine in 2016 (Therapy for Everyone). Dr. Polaha attended the University of Pittsburgh for her undergraduate studies and earned her doctorate at Auburn University.
Matthew Tolliver, Ph.D
Matthew Tolliver, PhD, is an Assistant Professor, Director of Behavioral Health in the Department of Pediatrics, and Assistant Director of the Institute for Integrated Behavioral Health at East Tennessee State University. He provides clinical services to rural and underserved pediatric populations in primary care settings and teaches and trains interprofessional learners in those settings. Dr. Tolliver is a lead instructor for ETSU’s Interprofessional Education Program and received a competitive internal grant to develop and implement an IPE curriculum in behavioral pediatrics. He trained in trauma-informed care and has worked on teams to innovatively address SDOHs and ACEs in pediatric primary care. Dr. Tolliver helped lead ETSU Pediatrics to become one of the first pediatric practices in Tennessee to earn NCQA Distinction in Behavioral Health Integration.
In support of improving patient care, the National Committee for Quality Assurance is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA), the American Psychological Association (APA), and the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) to provide Interprofessional Continuing Education for the healthcare team.
