Improving Quality and Efficiency of Care: The Power of Standardized Electronic Health Records
Electronic health records have the potential to improve quality of care and patient safety, but key quality data is often spread over multiple locations in the electronic chart, necessitating extensive, time-consuming reviews in order to obtain a complete and timely picture of a patient. The time required to perform a comprehensive chart review results in less time spent in direct face-to-face patient care, diminished clinical efficiency and increased risk of provider burnout, which in turn can have a detrimental impact on quality of care.

Allison Weathers, MD
Allison L. Weathers, MD, FAAN, is an Enterprise Associate for the Cleveland Clinic Health System and a general neurologist based at the Cleveland Clinic Main Campus Hospital. She is responsible for helping meet the health system’s goals and fulfill its IT strategy. She is also a member of the Cleveland Clinic Board of Governors. She obtained her undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Dr. Weathers is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and serves on a number of committees, subcommittees and the editorial board of the AAN’s official CME journal. She chairs the Epic Neurology Steering Board and co-chairs the Cerner Neurology Leadership Council. Dr. Weathers has presented and published on topics related to clinical informatics and neurology in journals such as Neurology, Continuum and Neurology Clinical Practice. She completed her neurology residency and a fellowship in advanced general neurology at Rush University Medical Center and is board certified in Neurology and Clinical Informatics.
Steven Shook, MD, MBA
Steven Shook, MD, MBA, is a Staff Neurologist at the Cleveland Clinic. In addition to his neuromuscular clinical practice, Dr. Shook staffs the general inpatient neurology service, teaches at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and presents at national conferences on neuromuscular ultrasound and management of peripheral nerve injury.
Dr. Shook has a history of leadership in the hospital and health care industry, with special interests in hospital operations, quality and patient safety, continuous improvement, healthcare information technology, and digital health. He is currently the Lead for Virtual Health at Cleveland Clinic, focused on using digital tools to transform clinical practice, optimize patient outcomes, improve patient and caregiver experience, reduce cost-of-care and better manage populations.
Bala Mudavath is Senior Analyst at Cleveland Clinic, USA. In this position, he has developed tools and configured quality checklists for clinical caregivers. He has worked extensively on hospital infrastructure and design--from staffing to operational changes. Mr. Mudavath has also worked with for-profit, non-profit and academic institutions with full life cycle implementations.
Mr. Mudavath has held numerous prestigious positions in a variety of settings: from the hospital environment to development of health care applications with Veterans Affairs and with medical centers. He successfully completed programs from HarvardX on improving global health, with a focus on quality and safety.
In support of improving patient care, the National Committee for Quality Assurance is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA), the American Psychological Association (APA), and the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) to provide Interprofessional Continuing Education for the healthcare team.
